ORIENTATION FOR THE NEWLY APPOINTED PROGRAMMER/SYSTEM ANALYSTS ORGANIZED BY ITeMS
The Orientation Programme that was held for the 7 newly appointed Programmer/System Analysts which started on 15th February 2023 and ended on 17th February, 2023 at the Directorate of ITeMS Boardroom. The exercise aims to providing the newly appointed Programmer/System Analysts with the essential knowledge and basic skills required to settle down happily for a productive role and progressive career experience.
The new staff are: O. M. Olagoke,O. O. Olubodun, S. M. Anifowose, A. A. Ajadi, Bolade C. Adio, G. O. Atanda and J. Akinyele
The orientation exercise was kicked open with the introductory remark from the Director, ITeMS, Mrs Abiodun Alao, where she gave a brief overview and structure of the Unit before and after 2012 (MIS, ITNH, COMITU, TRD, SDU, UMC), stating the vision and mission of the Unit in tandem with the University's vision, she admonished the new staff members to work smart, dress well, look ahead, and be professional while carrying out their duties. Her remark was followed by the opening remark of the Chairman, Board of ITeMS, Prof. W.M. Olatokun, emphasising the need to think “without the box”, have good interpersonal skills, empathy and the ability to document/report professionally.
The Heads of Units expressed their congratulations and highlighted the functions, tools, expectations and challenges of each Unit, stating the need for resource persons who are ready to come on board and improve on the job, which by virtue will help the staff members to stay relevant and be an asset to themselves, the Directorate and the University at large and also, advising the new staff members to harness available learning resources with emphasis on the need to avoid the stereotyped public service mentality.
During the course of the Orientation exercise the staff members were introduced to some basic IT tools (Advanced Microsoft Excel, Linux administration, Network troubleshooting, Video Editing, Scripting, Graphic Designs) that would be useful at their different units and the need to further develop themselves on those tools for professional outputs
There was a full session discussing the University's code of conduct and work ethics. The new staff members were informed about taking advantage of the information in the staff book. An assignment was given to the new staff members on personal SWOT analysis, which aimed to help them identify their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The new staff members were also required to digest the staff book thoroughly.
The director of ITeMS, Mrs Abiodun A. Alao, with her team, Soji Adisa, Taiwo Ajisafe, Seyi Oladele, Sanmi Adetule, Wole Adekola, Bukola Oronti, George Evans, Biodun Ajayi, Seye Oni and Lucky Abu served as resource persons during the programme.
There was a touring session to facilities under the directorate, including ITU CoM server room, Diamod FM studio, NCC sponsored Mini ICT square, Resource Centre, Network Operations Centre where they were welcomed by unit heads and interacted with other staff members
The wrap-up session was used to itemize challenges across units and to propose solutions. In their responsive presentations, the new staff members, represented by Mr G.O. Atanda and Mr A. J. Akinyele, adjudged the orientation programme as comprehensive, practical and leverage for productive roles in the University. They expressed appreciation to the directorate of ITeMS for organizing such a comprehensive program.
