INTRODUCTION
On Monday May 5th 2025, a group of 23 Computer Science students from Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology (FCFFT) New-Bussa, Niger State, Nigeria, embarked on an educational excursion to the University of Ibadan. The purpose of the visit was to gain practical insights into various departments within the university’s Information Technology and Media Services sector. The students were welcomed by university staff and guided through six key departments, where they interacted with professionals and learned about industry practices.
DEPARTMENTS VISITED AND KEY LEARNING
1. Training Research and Development
The students were introduced to various specialized services offered by the Unit, and different professional skills in Information Technology, which some may be interested in picking up after their studies.
2. Software Development Unit
The students were engaged in interactive discussions on various programming languages, software development tools, and practical applications of coding in real-world scenarios. They also observed ongoing projects and had the opportunity to engage with software developers in the unit.
3. Resource Center
The Resource Center provided students with practical use of digital tools such as the ID card production tools and computing facilities. They learned about data management.
4. University Media Services
In the Media Services department, students explored audiovisual technologies, content creation, and multimedia applications in IT. They witnessed demonstrations of digital editing tools and learned about the role of media in communication and education.
5. Management Information Systems (MIS)
The MIS team discussed information security and enterprise management systems. Students gained an understanding of how organizations utilize MIS to streamline operations and improve decision-making.
Conclusion
The excursion was an invaluable experience for the visiting students, offering them practical exposure to various aspects of information technology. University staff provided insightful demonstrations and explanations, making the visit educational and engaging. The students expressed their appreciation for the warm reception and the opportunity to learn beyond classroom theories.
