WORKPLACE NUTRI-GARDEN PROJECT: ITeMS, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN
What is it?
This is a collaborative research study titled "Feasibility and Acceptability of a Workplace-based Nutri-Garden and influence of Garden-Based Learning Among Staff of ITeMS, University of Ibadan campus." It explores the practicality and acceptance of establishing a Nutri-Garden within a workplace environment (specifically ITeMS, University of Ibadan as pilot) combined with garden-based learning for staff. The intervention includes engaging staff in planning, establishing, and maintaining the garden, alongside educational sessions on nutrition and healthy eating, focusing on quick-harvest local vegetables like cucumber, Soko, Ewedu, and Okra.
Objective
The overarching objective is to assess the feasibility, practicality, and acceptability of a workplace Nutri-Garden initiative. Specifically, the study aims to:
1. Gauge staff perception and attitude towards the concept.
2. Evaluate logistical and organizational feasibility.
3. Determine staff interest, willingness, and actual participation.
4. Identify barriers and facilitators to successful implementation.
5. Measure changes in nutrition knowledge and vegetable consumption behavior post intervention.
Who is involved?
- Participants: Staff members of Information Technology and Media Services (ITeMS) at the University of Ibadan campus, lead and coordinated by the Director, Mrs. Abiodun Alao.
- Implementors: Aweda Abimbola and Owoeye Opeyemi – MSc Students of the Department of Human Nutrition and Dietetics
- Mr Segun Ojo: Garden supervisor, University of Ibadan, Teaching and Research Farm, Crop Unit

- Nutrition and Dietetics and Dr. Oluwatosin Leshi, Research Scholar, Dept of Family and Community Medicine, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky.
Scope
The study is focused specifically on employees within the workplace setting of ITeMS,
University of Ibadan. It is being conducted through baseline and endline surveys, practical
garden implementation, and educational interventions. The findings from this project are intended to inform the potential for scaling up similar workplace wellness initiatives to other
departments and institutions within and outside the University of Ibadan in the future. The
expected outcome and impact of the project is to promote and ensure food security and healthy living among university staff.
